Oh, the Places You'll Go!
Oh, the Places You'll Go! explores the realities of women (trans inclusive) who have experiences of intimidation, violence, and trauma in the neighbourhoods of the Downtown-East Toronto. The photographed locations represent these sites of trauma and violence. The accompanying text is adapted from conversations between the artist and community members and from the Bad Date Book, a monthly community-driven alert system for sex workers. The work’s purpose is twofold:
1. To act as a violence awareness campaign: Sending a postcard is typically reserved for sharing your experiences with others while traveling. The postcard images, though seemingly mundane, everyday locations, are sites of trauma and violence; these too are experiences we should share with others. The artist hopes these images challenge viewers to consider if and how their own privilege impacts the ways in which they move through and inhabit space.
2. To act as a tool for working through trauma: The postcards are a mechanism for survivors of violence to respond to their perpetrators, whether known to them or not.
